Fault - perpendicular aftershock clusters following the 2003 Mw = 5 . 0 Big Bear , California , earthquake

چکیده
[1] To explore aftershock-triggering mechanisms for the 2003 Big Bear, California earthquake sequence, we determined differential travel-times and applied the double-difference technique to relocate these events, which formed three clusters. The main cluster coincides with the 3 km long northwest striking sub-vertical mainshock fault. The other two sub-vertical clusters, located at opposite ends of the mainshock rupture, are almost perpendicular to the mainshock fault, contradicting the 60 separation angle of conjugate faults as predicted from frictional laws. Allowing for a 30 uncertainty in the cataloged strike, dip and rake values about 75% of the aftershocks are strike-slip as determined from first motion and complete waveform moment tensor inversions. We use a mainshock conceptual slip model to derive Coulomb Failure Stress regions, and assess correlations between stress increases and aftershock locations. We conclude that the perpendicular aftershock clusters were triggered by the mainshock static stress perturbation. Citation: Chi, W.-C., and E. The 28 June 1992 Big Bear earthquake occurred at 15:05:21 GMT and is considered to be an af tershock of the earlier Mw = 7.3 Landers earthquake. F rom overall aftershock locations and long-period focal studies, rupture is general ly assumed to have propagated northeast. No surface rupture was found, however , and the mainshock locations determined f rom both strong motion and TERRAscope data ar...
متن کاملEarthquake Monitoring in Southern California for Seventy-Seven Years (1932–2008)
The Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) has produced the SCSN earthquake catalog from 1932 to the present, a period of more than 77 yrs. This catalog consists of phase picks, hypocenters, and magnitudes. We present the history of the SCSN and the evolution of the catalog, to facilitate user understanding of its limitations and strengths. Hypocenters and magnitudes have improved in qualit...

متن کاملThe 1992 Landers Earthquake Sequence: Seismological Observations
The (Mw6.1, 7.3, 6.2) 1992 Landers earthquakes began on April 23 with the Mw6.1 1992 Joshua Tree preshock and form the most substantial earthquake sequence to occur in California in the last 40 years. This sequence ruptured almost 100 km of both surficial and concealed faults and caused aftershocks over an area 100 km wide by 180 km long. The faulting was predominantly strike slip and three mai...
